October in Junior Infants

Mrs Duffy’s Junior Infants have had a very busy time during October.  We all started learning our sounds and are really enjoying all the songs and stories that help us to remember them.  We have been chatting all about harvest and the farm in Aistear.  We loved our trip to Airfield Farmers’ Market and were very lucky with the weather.  We had a visit from the Gardaí who taught us how to remember the emergency number 112 and also spoke to us about Hallowe’en safety.  We did lots of Autumn artwork and made really cool “Leaf People”.  We also did lots of Hallowe’en activities during our last week before half-term.  We had fun discussing the different sizes of pumpkins and even tested how far they would roll.  We all got dressed up for the last day – everyone looked amazing!

November news from Junior Infants

November has been a busy month in Junior Infants with our theme being “Water” and sub-theme “houses and homes”.  Read our blog below to see some of the exciting things we have been up to!

They played in the “Laundrette” for Role play.  They have become very good at separating their clothes by colour, pairing socks and hanging up on the clothes line!

We were busy learning all about floating and sinking in Science.  We experimented with lots of different materials and we drew our results!  We also made wooden rafts and we were thrilled when they floated!!

Another of our Science experiments for Science week was the rainbow skittle experiment.  First we did a Maths lesson with the skittles making shapes and patterns.  Then we added water and watched the magic happen!

They learned about the storm “Noah’s Ark”.  They used their cutting skills to make doves and they painted lovely rainbows.  They learned the science about what makes a rainbow.  They made rain drop mosaics to brighten up our windows.

Junior Infants have been doing a fabulous job with their sounds, blending, dictation and writing – we are so proud of them!

We learned about different types of houses and homes and what materials they can be made of.  Then we designed our own houses using scrap paper!

We also have had lots of fun in P.E. this month!

Active Irish

6th class have been combining their Irish skills with P.E. at the moment. Firstly each group was given a fitness circuit in Irish. They had to figure out what to do and what equipment they needed. Then each group completed their own circuit as well as having a go on everyone else’s! Some groups also added in an extra “sixth class” challenge! The children then got the opportunity to teach the Junior Infants how to do each circuit and they completed them together!

This week Junior Infants have enjoyed the sunshine, playing games outside.  They are predicting and observing Science in Action…will it float or sink?  And…..big news…..the chicks have hatched and they came to visit us – they are so gorgeous!

Walking for Water

The children took part in the Walk for Water on World Water Day this Thursday and they wore blue to school to symbolise water.

What would it be like to balance a container on your head and walk 6km a day to get water?

In Junior Infants the children balanced books on their heads while walking.  In First Class the children tried balancing beanbags while walking in our yard.  You have to be very careful and it takes a long time!!  We needed to concentrate.  We held out our hands to help our balance.
