Double Win for our Senior Soccer Girls

Perhaps the fact that it was International Women’s Day played a part, but there’s no doubt that both the Yellow and Red senior girls soccer teams were inspired in their league matches on Thursday.  Displaying superb strength and stamina on the grass pitch at Kilcoole Primary School, the Yellow team defeated the opposition 1 – 0 with missed opportunities that didn’t do the scoreline justice. Meanwhile, at Leicester Celtic, the Red team took on the Muslim National School, winning by a convincing 3 – 0.  The girls soccer season is off to a scorching start!

4th Class Wins Habitat for Humanity Hockey

34 girls and boys from 4th Class played in a 6-a-side hockey tournament in Wesley College today. 28 teams from 11 primary schools entered, of which 5 were from Taney School.  The teams were ably managed by their coaches and some parents – Louise Callen, Jack McGrath, Scott Furlong, Kathryn Jones and Oonagh Fox.

The tournament was organised by a 4th Year student, Hannah McGrane, as a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity. She is part of a team of 22 students and 5 teachers who are travelling to Romania in June to build an apartment for an orphan who has turned 18 and will be leaving the orphanage and starting out on their own.

The children had an absolute ball and all the teams did really well. Team Oonagh won their group and went on to defeat Rathgar in the semi-finals and St Brigid’s in the final, cheered on by all the other Taney teams.

Many thanks to the coaches and parents who bared the freezing conditions and many congratulations to all the children who participated and especially to Team Oonagh who lifted the trophy at the end of the day!

The Taney A Boys’ football team were narrowly defeated in the final of the Dublin Southside Football League on 7th June against long-standing rival St. Mary’s Boys School. In a tightly-fought contest, our boys led 3-1 before St. Mary’s clawed back two goals in the final furlong. At 3 all, extra time delivered no more goals which led to a tense penalty shoot-out. Our boys were on the loosing end but we are so very proud of them to have reached the final and to have represented the school so well. Thanks to all those who came out in support.

The sun shone for the annual sporting spectacle of Taney Parish Primary School, held in Marlay Park on 2nd June. Juniors infants to 6th Class pupils showed off their athletic prowess through the sprint, relay, hoop, cup and ball, and obstacle races. The children delighted in their medals and well-earned post-race treats and the parents in the impressive display of skills and class camaraderie. Thanks to all those who volunteered and helped make Sports Day a success.
