Active Challenge 2021 Update

posted in: Active Flag, School News | 0

In the final week of the Active Challenge, the pupils of Taney Parish Primary School travelled an impressive 2,416.635 km!  This brings our total over four weeks to an astounding 8,912.585 km!

Altogether, we travelled just beyond Brazil.  Brazil is located in South America and it has a population of approximately 183,888,841.  The capital of Brazil is Brasilia and the official language is Portuguese.  Brazil has won the soccer World Cup more times than any other nation and it is also home to the world’s largest carnival.  The Rio Carnival takes place on the streets of Rio de Janeiro.

Everyone should be very proud of their excellent efforts!  Congratulations!

We are back……

After nine months of no after-school sports for the children in Taney, we are finally back on the pitches.  While it is not the full programme, it is a great start.  How lovely it was to see the hockey sticks on the backs of our 6th Class pupils going into school yesterday morning, followed by their football boots today, and we look forward to 5th Class hockey commencing on Friday.

We are currently trialling “bubble sports”, where each class is coached on a separate pitch to ensure that all Covid regulations are carefully adhered to.  We hope that we will be able to roll this out further down the school in due course, so that children across the other years will also be able to resume the much-loved Taney sports.

A special thanks to the Sports Coordinators for their help in getting Taney Sports up and running this week.

English, Irish and PE!

The pupils in Sixth Class have been focusing on Procedural Writing and the use of “instruction verbs” in English and Irish.  In PE, each pod created a game using some equipment.  Using the procedural writing genre, we wrote some fantastic instructions for the games we created.  Another pod followed the steps to try out our games.  As you can see, we had great fun!

When P.E., English and homework are combined!!!

The children this week are focussing on orders in Irish and English.  In P.E. class today they had to plan a game with their pod using a small amount of equipment and then tonight they will write up the game and have it ready to hand in on Friday!

There are three challenges:

  1. Working together to create an idea.
  2. Creating a game with a small amount of equipment.
  3. Creating a game that had 8 steps.

Active School Week

Active School Week is a really enjoyable part of the school year for the school community.  This year, because of COVID-19, it was not possible for it go ahead.  Instead, we invited families to participate in the national “Active Home Wee”’ from the 27th April to 3rd May.

To engage in the challenge, children found four different ways of being active, every day, aiming for the recommended 60 MINUTES, or more.v They were encouraged to try something NEW, have FUN with a family activity and to ENJOY the week!  Check out some of the fun activities our pupils participated in.

We hope everyone enjoyed taking part and trying new activities.  It doesn’t have to end today, you can keep yourself and your family active in the days and weeks ahead.  Keeping active helps to promote our health and happiness.  Remember Taney Parish Primary School says “DON’T DELAY, BE ACTIVE TODAY”.

Habitat for Humanity 6 a-side Hockey Tournament

Six Taney teams comprising of both boys and girls from 4th Class took part in the annual Habitat for Humanity Fundraising 6 a-side hockey tournament on Tuesday 4th February in Wesley College.  It was a fantastic afternoon, with plenty of great hockey played and oodles of fun.  All teams did very well in their groups.  One of the Taney teams made it to the final against Whitechurch having beaten Kill of the Grange in the Semi- final.  They played extremely well and it was a great, and very close game, but were unfortunately defeated by just one goal.  It was great to see such fantastic school spirit with all the Taney teams staying around to cheer them on in both the semi final and final.
