Taney Parish Primary School has one of the few primary school orchestras in Ireland. Established by Mrs Hazel Riordan in 1980, today it is mainly made up of violins (in 3 parts), flutes and cellos with occasional percussion or piano parts. To join the orchestra, from 1st Class, a child needs to be reasonably competent on their instrument (no grades necessary) and attending lessons either in school or with a teacher outside school. There are some instruments (violin, cello, clarinet, trumpet) that are available to hire from the school. One of the pleasures of learning an instrument is getting to play music with others. The orchestra accompanies the carols at the Senior Carol Service every year and performs at the annual school concert in May. It practices on Wednesday mornings from 8 a.m. to 8.30 a.m.
