Many parents see mobile phones as an excellent way of keeping in touch with their children and, therefore, as an added safety measure. The school is anxious to support parents in whatever way possible with regard to the safety of their children and so children may bring mobile phones to school. However, the rule governing the use of mobile phones is that they must be switched off at the gate on entering the school premises each morning and may not be switched back on until leaving through the school gate each afternoon. With the teacher’s permission only, there are some occasions when a pupil may use their mobile phone to contact home when the benefit and convenience for all concerned far outweighs the pedantic application of this rule. Tips for Parents on children’s use of mobile phones is available from the Irish Cellular Industry Association.
